CAMACOL Participates in a Successful Business Development Mission to Lima, Peru and Santiago de Chile.

CAMACOL Participates in a Successful Business Development Mission to Lima, Peru and Santiago de Chile.

A a very successful ITC/Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Mission was conducted to Lima, Peru and Santiago de Chile.
The mission included high level discussions on the current economic climate in Lima, with Mr. P. Michael McKinley, U.S. Ambassador to Peru and Mr. John Simmons, Senior Commercial Officer. The In-Country Briefing also included participation in an inter-active session with senior staff from the commercial and consular services.

A briefing by the International Trade Consortium of Miami Dade County, which highlighted the quality of services rendered by the ITC also took place under the direction of Mr. Tony Ojeda, the Executive Director of the ITC. Participation in the branding session also included representatives from the Port of Miami, Miami International Airport and the Miami Dade Cultural Arts Department.

A luncheon session where key business leaders had the opportunity to inter-act with the private and public sector delegation took place prior to the afternoon seminar and business linkage session.

CAMACOL participated in the seminar organized by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and its Americas Linkage Program. The panel was moderated by Ms. Olga Ramudo, President of Express Travel US, and a member of the Board of Directors of CAMACOL. As part of our CAMACOL presentation we provided the participants with an informative video presentation, which showcased the accomplishments of the Hemispheric Congress and the opportunities afforded to business persons from the region to attend the event. The video presentation also promoted the 30th Congress which is slated for May 26-30, 2009 and which bodes to be a highly successful and unique event which will facilitate and address issues affecting international trade in this current economic crisis.

As part of CAMACOL’s new film industry development program, meetings were also held with the Cultural Affairs Ministry in Peru to establish linkages between the chambers of commerce, the cultural ministries and the State of Florida Governor’s Office of Film and Entertainment, utilizing CAMACOL and its Hemispheric Congress as its conduit.

Meetings were also held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the Mayor of Lima, Peru.

It is important to highlight the current economic climate in Peru, due to the prospects of the Free Trade Agreement. Business is booming. Political conflicts are overshadowed by free market tendencies, and issues such as the rule of law, transparency, education, and health are seen as achievable challenges rather than burdens from the past.

The mission also targeted Santiago de Chile which included a meeting with the Honorable Paul E. Simons U.S. Ambassador to Chile, and a business briefing with the Commercial Counselor, Mr. Mitch Larsen.

One of the highlights of the mission was a very important and informative workshop facilitated by the National Chamber of Commerce, where business representatives from Chile were able to interact with representatives from the Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami, on issues of vital importance to the trade process between Chile, and Miami Dade County.

Mr. Albert Oses, President of the Florida Customs Brokers Association provided an excellent conduit for the important issues discussed which focused on facilitating the process of doing business with Miami Dade County under the changing import regulations, security concerns, and transport issues. Mr. Oses took on the role of mediator and spoke in his professional capacity on the day to day challenges and trends faced in the industry. His valued contribution to the discussion enabled the participants from Chile and the representatives from Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami, to understand their respective perspectives and work toward obtaining solutions to this issue.

It is evident that the Hemispheric Congress provides a viable service to Miami Dade County and Florida’s international business community, through its Permanent Secretariat, which facilitates these important business linkages throughout the Hemisphere and Spain.

Following this important and spirited encounter, a networking reception was held hosted by Mr. Alex Thierman, Director of the International Division for the National Chamber in Chile and a director of CAMACOL’s Hemispheric Congress Permanent Secretariat as well. This issue is of such concern to international trade, that a panel session during the forthcoming 30th Hemispheric Congress will be held.

CAMACOL extends its congratulations to the staff and directors of the Jay Malina International Trade Consortium . Special appreciation is extended to Mr. Tony Ojeda and Ms. Maria Dreyfus, whose steadfast commitment and professionalism truly made this mission possible, and it is through their efforts that we not only achieved, but surpassed our proposed objectives. We also extend our appreciation to the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and its staff who provided us with valued assistance.

We also reiterate our support of the work implemented by the Jay Malina International Trade Consortium, under the leadership of Commissioner Natacha Seijas, Chair of the ITC. We are true partners of the ITC and have a firm commitment that the public and private sectors working together achieve positive results and better the quality of life of our citizens.
